Golf Delaware
Our First State, Delaware truly is a diamond of a golf vacation destination. Though it is small compared to other states, alone at a mere 96 miles long and 9 to 35 miles wide, this Small Wonder packs in a major quantity of championship golf courses. The Delmarva Peninsula alone offers up more than 50 courses! The moderate climate provided by the Atlantic helps to ensure there will be pleasant weather for your golfing vacation.
From natural beauties like Bear Trap Dunes which offer all manner of amenities, including gourmet groceries and an ice cream parlor, to the Rookery, where you can play a round around a Great Blue Heron nesting preserve, one thing’s certain about golfing in Delaware: It’s hardly common, ordinary or usual.
The I-95 Golf Trail reports 20 courses along that interstate, each with its own distinct appeals and challenges. Though a number of them are a goodly distance from that interstate highway, they still make up a golf trail one could easily enjoy traveling.
Delaware’s more recent additions include the Bayside Resort Golf Club, an 18-hole course that boasts an inconceivable 7,545 yards. This Jack Nicklaus signature course in Fenwick Island was co-designed by Rick Jacobson. Amongst the key appeals of the course is the strategy necessary to play it well through its wetlands, tree-lined fairways and opens. Also new on the scene is White Clay Creek Golf Course, a daily-fee designed by Arthur Hills and Steve Forest & Associates. Amongst aspects which make this an unusual course is that it surrounds an active race track and its stable areas. The terrain has been kept in its natural shape, with native flora appearing along with natural streams. Designed with ecological concerns in mind, this championship course presents a pleasant atmosphere, a taste of wilderness within a metropolis.
On the near-future horizon is Saint Anne’s, a course being designed by a noteworthy team headed up by 2003 U.S. Open champion, Jim Furyk, and intended to emulate England’s great courses. It will feature hedgerows amongst the many natural features of a wetlands area. Those who have been to Jolly Old will certainly appreciate this private course’s style those who haven’t may end up getting a virtual UK experience there.
Being located just north of New York City makes this a very accessible destination. The many flights to JFK and other New York City airports ensure that airfare remains reasonable as well. Car rentals are readily available, and make a better choice than trains for visiting and taking in a few rounds. Though it’s still a good ways outside of NYC, Delaware’s proximity remains inviting for New Yorkers as well. The historical sites are likewise not to be missed, so one could very easily make a great golf and U.S. History excursion of it.
