Golf Missouri

The Show Me state wants to show you just how good golfing can get! A woodsy, rolling hills state, one would expect Missouri to have some rather impressive courses, and it doesn’t disappoint; It would appear that Missouri is one Saintly place for golf.

Starting at the top of the best 10 in the state is our first saint, the Country Club of St. Albans’ Tavern Creek Golf Course. This 18-hole championship course romps across 6800 yards with a course rating of 73.3 and a slope rating of 144! Designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, this challenging course was first played in 1992. It’s actually two courses, 36 holes, sharing common facilities, so you’ve already got your second play set up for you at St. Albans’.

The next Saint we’ll share is the St. Louis Country Club. Appearing halfway up the list of this nation’s top 100 golf courses, (and at #6 within the state) this private non-equity course was designed by Charles B. Mac Donald, and opened in 1914.

Branson has made itself into quite a tourist attraction, and a number of celebrities now make it their home. It’s no surprise, then, that the Branson Creek Golf Club should earn high marks here. The babbling brooks, waterfalls and stone walled countryside have a quintessential Ireland sort of feel about them, even as they’re carved into the woodland plains of Missouri. A 4.5 star Tom Fazio design, the first 18 holes boasts 7,036 yards, a rating of 73 and slope rating of 133 on Zoysia grass. Troon managed, the club is in the design stages with Tom on a second round of 18 holes to compliment it. With five sets of tees, there are plenty of ways to play Branson Creek, and ample charm to keep you coming back again and again.

Though overlooked by some of the publications the Lodge at Four Seasons’ three course offerings in the Lake in the Ozarks merits attention as well. Offering 36 regulation holes as well as an executive 9-hole set, this resort’s first priority is excellence, and it shows. From the 15,000 square foot Spa Shiki’s pampering to the fine and casual dining, Four Seasons distinguishes itself as a family owned and operated resort. More important to most of us is the golf. Travel & Leisure Magazine referred to The Lodge as “One of the best golf resorts in the world.” Top designers Jack Nicklaus, Ken Kavanaugh and the incomparable Robert Trent Jones Senior graced these scenic hills with their talents, providing guests with 54 championship holes. Season’s Ridge, the player-friendly 4-star Kavanaough design and Robert Trent Jones’ Witch’s Cove enjoy a 4,000 square foot clubhouse that offers up food and beverage service. The Club at Porto Cima is an 18-hole waterfront Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Recognized as Golf Digest’s #4 “best new private golf course” Porto Cima lies within a short walk of the Lodge, and is also a Harold Koplar family holding. If you should choose to take a day off, the marina offers fishing, parasailing, pontoon boats and yachting at this mountain lake’s full-service marina. The entertainment, food and environment are top-notch, everything a golf resort should be.

Just these few examples should demonstrate why the Show Me state is a fine golf vacation destination, perhaps amongst the Midwest’s finest.
