Golf Washington State
When you’re ready for some truly breathtaking beauty to golf in, head on over to the Evergreen State. Washington’s coastal half enjoys lush green grasses, mountain-view horizons and the dense evergreen forests for which it gained its nickname, and there may be no prettier place on earth.
Edging into the Top 100 Courses in the nation is Arnold Palmer’s Prospector course within the Golf Community development of Suncadia. This championship course’s signature 10th hole is played from tee boxes placed 120 feet above the fairway, providing a breathtaking vista of the river and mountains. A majestic scenery and landscape sure to bring one several moments to pause and bask in the goodness of simply being there, playing this great game in such incomparable surroundings. At 7,112 par-72 yards, you’ll be able to enjoy this course regardless of your skill level. Guests of the resort hotel gain a minor discount, but the rates remain affordable, under $100. Located some 80 miles east of Seattle on I-90, the drive to the course may be the most beautiful you’ve ever taken, one of the few times you enjoy getting there nearly as much as the playing itself.
Just 15 miles north of Portland, Oregon, Camas Meadows Golf Club lies in wait. Lovingly integrated into this rich natural setting are 18 holes of championship golf course designed by Andy Raugust, formerly of the Jack Nicklaus firm. A challenging course, the Gold tee set offers up 6518 par-72 yards with a course rating of 71.3 and a slope rating of 133. Be ready to enjoy the day, but bring your precision with you for that set of tees! In places, you’ll find snow-covered mountains rising up to cap an evergreen and deep blue horizon. At other times, you’ll be buried deep within those verdigris hallows when you come across the green, pitched a deceptive twenty feet upon a tiered slope and off to the left, with a river running behind the trees, in case you were feeling brave.
We’re sorry to have to report that visitors to Tacoma may no longer enjoy the North Shore Golf Course. The course, which opened in 1961, was purchased for a considerable sum by a developer who has since closed the course and is building homes on the fairways. This serves as reminder that we are truly fortunate to have so many beautiful courses to play, while demand for such land is so high.
That won’t leave you without options in Tacoma, though. Gold Mountain Golf Club in nearby Bremerton is a public municipal course. When they describe it as "carved into the Pacific Northwest," it really can’t be stated any better. The feel of the Pacific Northwest’s rain forests is preserved, while dense, rich, colors of grasses carpeting the fairways and greens invite you to take your shoes off and walk about barefoot. The images alone conjure up the earthy fresh pine scents. The course stimulates all senses! Opened in 1996, this John Harbottle III design provides 7073 par-72 yards with a course rating of 73.5 and a slope rating of 131 on annual blue grass. The Olympic Course has earned some impressive awards, including a 4.5 star rating from Golf Digest, 2nd Best Value in the U.S., just behind Bethpage Black, Best Public Course in Washington for several years, top 25 in the nation, Top 100 You Can Play… But enough already. You already know you want to play there! Want the icing on the cake? As a municipal course, it’s incredibly affordable to boot!
Just these three courses should be ample example of how Washington State is an ideal golf vacation destination. Picturesque and majestic, a golf vacation in Washington, invites one to come play in this !
