Phoenix - West Valley

Phoenix - West Valley (Glendale, Peoria, Avondale)

The West Valley area is much like the rest of Phoenix – there's a golf course just about everywhere! If you've never played in Phoenix you may be wondering how they could build lush green courses in the dry desert. Think of Phoenix as an irrigated oasis (and golfer's paradise.) You won't believe you're still in the desert with all the verdant fairways everywhere. Only the rocky outcroppings and mountains in the background lay hint to the arid nature of the region. Summers can be hot, but in the winter, it's a very comfortable, balmy place to be and play. When the rest of the country is covered in snow, you'll be working on your tan! One more thing: golf carts are often the primary mode of transportation!

There are several courses in the Sun City West area – Desert Springs, Granite Falls, Pebblebrook, Hillcrest – Well over a dozen, all told, within a 4 mile by 5 mile rectangle! About a mile from that, you'll find the Willow Creek and Coyote Lakes Golf Courses. It just keeps on going on like that throughout most all of Phoenix.

Of course each design is different, each designer working his own personal magic on the landscape to form a course that challenges without becoming oppressive. There are some common elements though: Water hazards will exist, desert or not, and there will be grass and trees, desert or not. The West Valley's courses reflect their terrain, a different feel than those in the Northeast region around Scottsdale. Of course, the best way of knowing so many courses is to play some of them for yourself!

Golf Scene: There are two types of visitors in Phoenix: snowbirds and golfers -- and most of the snowbirds play golf. Seriously, there may be no greater concentration of golf courses in the world than Phoenix. Golf is the scene in Phoenix.

Play & Stay: With so many courses in the area, nearly anywhere you stay in the West Valley is a virtual Play and Stay. The resorts often offer package deals that can add up to big savings on courses you'd have paid far more to play on, so package deals are still something you'll definitely want to consider. The better resort chains are well represented in Phoenix, so the quality of hospitality is high – nearly as high as the quality of the courses themselves.

Golf Travel & Transportation: Phoenix is a very common destination, serviced by most all of the airlines. By road, it's at the sharp bend in I-10, where it turns westward again on its way to California, due north of Tucson.

19th Hole Entertainment: Phoenix is a vital town, and the West Valley is gateway to the excitement. Culture is common, with an opera, symphony, dance groups, theatre, pop concerts, museums, dance clubs, saloons – you name it, it's there for you, if you can tear yourself away from the courses!
