British Columbia

British Columbia

Nowhere in North America is the old growth’s sylvan splendor more majestically portrayed than in the rainforest lands of British Columbia. Set on the shores of the Pacific, resting just above the U.S. border, an indescribably pristine richness pervades the auld landscape. Each breath one takes is scented with venerable pines underlaid by an earthy aroma of gentle decay. When the breezes blow in from the coast, they carry fresh salt fragrances with them, refreshing and delightful experiences for all of the senses.

It takes no great effort to see that these traits make for one incomparably beautiful golf vacation destination. World-class courses like the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club are gently bedded into this exquisite surreal landscape. Greywolf, which has been named Best New Canadian Course and ranks amongst the Top Ten Golf Resorts in Canada, will awe and impress as it challenges. Just down the road from this marvel is Eagle Range, a favorite of PGA tour players. Trickle Creek and the nearby St. Gene’s (St. Eugene Mission) are each likewise unique and majestic offerings within the Canadian Rocky Mountains in B.C. Visitors to the Vancouver and coastal area will find inconceivably surreal wonders in courses like Furry Creek Country Club, Northview Golf Club, and the Morgan Creek Golf Club. Be sure to check out the Whistler area north of Vancouver and Squamish as well. Big Sky Golf Club, Chateau Whistler, Nicklaus North and the Whistler Golf Club, all to the north-northwest of Garibaldi Provincial Park, are a four-some not to be missed. Vancouver Island, just a stone’s throw from Washington State in the U.S, provides us with Arbutus Ridge, Crown Isle Resort, Fairwinds, Olympic View, Bear Mountain Storey Creek and Pheasant Glen golf clubs and resorts.

Of course seafood is always on the menu and fine dining opportunities abound. Don’t be afraid to venture out, though. Gems can be found in what may seem to be the most unlikely of places there in Paradise. The Happy Landing, for example: The two Swiss-trained chefs serve up incomparable meals including homemade Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Roesti, and deserts. Not only are the tastes a true treat, but the service is exceptional as well. Such gems abound, if you take the time to discover them.

British Columbia is ripe with national parks of staggering beauty. Glacier, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke, And Yoho National Parks, Gulf Islands, Pacific Rim and Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserves, as well as the Haida Heritage Site all welcome respectful visitors. Summer and winter sports, including the 2010 Winter Olympics at Whistler-Blackcomb and in Vancouver, bicycling, whitewater rafting, sailing and sailboarding, horseback riding, and even the slightly different Canadian Football are all played. A cornucopia of wildlife riddles the landscape, enriching those fortunate enough to witness it.

While the cities certainly have their styles and appeals, the avid golfer is likely to find, as the outdoors men have, that British Columbia is a true paradise to experience and cherish. Discover the wonders of the Pacific Northwest; make British Columbia your golf vacation destination!
